League play is the heart of the Tampa Bay Curling Club. Our leagues are where new curlers turn the basics into real games, where friendships form, and where the friendly rivalries that make the sport so much fun come to life. Most games are played in the evening on indoor ice, so you can curl after work without ever worrying about the Florida weather.
How our leagues work
We run recreational leagues through the year, typically organized into a summer session and separate fall and winter seasons. A season usually runs as a ten game schedule followed by playoffs that crown the season champions. Teams are made up of four players, and games are played as a series of ends, with the team holding more stones nearest the button scoring at the close of each one.
Our leagues are built to be welcoming. Beginners and experienced curlers play side by side, and teams are mixed so newer players can learn from those who have been throwing rocks for a while. You do not need to bring a full team - if you sign up on your own, we will help place you with a group.
What a game looks like
- Two teams of four players each take turns delivering stones
- Every player throws two stones per end, alternating with the other team
- Teammates sweep to control how far the stone travels and how much it curls
- After all stones are thrown, the team with rocks closest to the button scores
- A typical league game runs about two hours from first stone to last
A league with personality
Half the fun of our seasons is the team names, which lean hard into curling puns - past leagues have featured the likes of License to Curl, Get Your Sheet Together, And Broom Goes the Dynamite, and Rock In Da House battling it out for the title. The competition is friendly but fierce, and the playoffs are always a highlight, with the top teams trading ends and plenty of good-natured trash talk on the way to the final.
Events and the season calendar
Beyond regular league nights, the club hosts events through the year, including Learn to Curl sessions for newcomers, open draws, and the end-of-season playoffs. Because we play outdoors-free on indoor ice, our calendar runs year round - though, like everyone on the Gulf Coast, we have had to reshuffle a season or two around a hurricane before.
Season dates and registration windows change from year to year. If you would like to know when the next season starts, or when the next Learn to Curl session is scheduled, please get in touch and we will point you in the right direction.
Ready to join a league?
If you have never curled before, the best route into a league is a Learn to Curl session so you are comfortable with the basics. If you have curled elsewhere and want to find a team in the Tampa Bay area, reach out and tell us a little about your experience. Either way, we are glad to help you get on the ice.
